Benjamin Franklin said:
“Life’s tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.”
Have you ever had one of those days where you try to fix one thing, but that action causes something else to go awry?
It all started when Daddy Papersurfer became worried about getting old. It wasn’t any one thing really, it could’ve been all the work he’d been doing at the Cliff Top Residence making him feel his bones, or it might’ve been all those memories of childhood toys. Whatever it was, it had him fretting.
Now, his lovely secretary (who shall remain nameless and perfect for the duration of the story) happened upon a news article about a study soon to be published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. She knew this was just the ticket to having him back to his usual peppy self. The article quoted the good doctors:
Searching the Internet keeps our mind sharp as we age by building solid connections between brain cells, a new study shows.
Simple Googling joins better-known brain exercises for middle and old age, such as learning a second language, doing puzzles or going back to school, California scientists say.
All the above can “improve brain function” as we age, which is science-speak for the better-known phrase “use it or lose it.”
There’s a slight catch, though. Using the Internet only helps people who are already good at it, whereas other brain exercises – reading books or doing crosswords – help everyone.
Indeed, he read it and was immediately full of excitement! This would surely be a veritable fountain of youth for him! He already spent hours on the internet… he had a blog, he was a blogger… and a mighty one at that!
And so, Daddy Papersurfer spent hours and hours online, always explaining to the lovely goddess he calls Lo, TG, that it was necessary for his health. He was after all, excercising his brain and building sold connections between those brain cells, and there simply wasn’t anything more important than that.
Except for the one, smallest, little problem that happened as a result.
Please… don’t laugh.
This is quite a serious matter.
We’re quite sure that his brain is alright, but we’re not sure what to do about this newest problem.
It seems that being seated for long periods of time while building solid connections between brain cells has some side effects. It seems other things get built at the same time.
If you have any ideas or tips to share, please… we beg of you to do so.
We’d have left it up to the doctor, but no one has heard from him since that visit.

Comment by daddypapersurfer October 16, 2008 @ 1:23 pmsylvie & 70steen – we must find the good doctor. His family’s quite upset. I’m organizing a search event and will let you both know. I could use someone to carry the torch.
Shinade – I would of course, warn people first. Not to worry. (and I will be by your site a bit later to pick that up… you sweetie!)
daddypapersurfer – Please don’t cry. Just think of the positive side… all those brain cells working so well now. You can’t have everything you know!
And.. thank you for that vivid image. I’m sure it will still be with me when I’m casting up spells this weekend. Mr. Frac has cleared a lovely area for the cauldron out in the yard. I may even take a photo for the fraccers!
