Yesterday, some ignorant asshat posted a hoax about Miley Cyrus’ death, first at Wikipedia, then it was cross-posted over at Digg.
The page at Wikipedia has been corrected since, but the Digg page has at this time, almost 500 diggs to the story, which reads:
On September 5th 2008 Miley Cyrus died in a fatal car crash on the way to the set of Hannah Montana. Her car was part of a side impact crash with a F-350 driven by an unidentified black man. She was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital only to die there a few minutes after arriving.
Fracas has saved a screen cap in the event someone wants to see it. Just ask.
In fact, why not first head over to Digg user SEANWOOKIE’s profile page to let him know how happy you are that for over 6 hours, he didn’t once bother to acknowledge that the story he dugg was a hoax. Yep folks… even though an hour in, another user told him to nix the Wikipedia link (since it was a hoax and corrected) but he all but disappeared from his own revelation.
If he was duped by some other asshat’s ‘creativity’ at Wikipedia, wouldn’t it be decent to apologize?
He hasn’t.
David Emery over at About.com’s Urban Legends Blog had this to say:
Contrary to fast-spreading rumors planted by pranksters on Digg.com and Wikipedia, 15-year-old Miley Cyrus, pop singer and star of the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana TV series, did not die in a car crash on Friday, September 5.
As of Saturday morning, no such accident had been reported in any legitimate news source. The story is a hoax — and a poorly spelled one, at that.
His blog shows a screen cap of the false story at Yahoo News, and links over to the larger view. I’m sharing the same screen cap with you below-left. Above, you’re seeing a snippet of the false Wikipedia page where, despite the hoax claiming she died on September 5, 2008… the Wikipedia inset lists October 5, 2008 as her date of death.
So David Emery is correct in that the hoaxters can’t spell. Apparently they can’t read a calendar correctly either.
So a hoax with misspelled words and incorrect dates in it ends up being taken seriously, given credibility by ending up on local, televised and internet news; dugg almost 500 times and as we speak, kids who don’t know this isn’t real yet, are spending their time creating Miley Cyrus memorial videos over at youtube.
That tells you somerthing about herd mentality doesn’t it?
And asshats.

Saying you fooled the internet is like saying you fooled the telephone or you fooled the microwave.
All you did is make yourself look like a fool ON the Internet.

ellie – Honestly, it’s not good for you to have such strong feelings about someone who has no real effect on your life. Why not just not watch her show or buy her music? It’s what I do. It seems to work. I don’t mind if she’s alive at all. I’m really ok with it.

Okay.. so far I have ella, ali and you. I think I should start a support group for y’all. Being so upset about her being alive (when she really probably has no real impact on your lives) is so totally unhealthy for you folks; I feel like I should help you get through this somehow. If you all don’t mind, could you post your general location in the world (no specifics just yet… that should be private anyway) so I can determine if an actual in person kind of therapy group would be best, or if you’ll need some kind of video link to each other.
In the meanwhile, to stay safe, I suggest none of you watch anymore television, and try stay away from the celebirty and pop culture sites online. Might I suggest you keep busy (if you must be online) over at somewhere like addictinggames or something?

bugsyrocker – Whew… at least you’re not another “I wish she was dead” person. I agree that people should try check stories out before they run with them. Something else I noticed is that even in the threads to posts where people are saying it’s a HOAX… people still leave “RIP Miley” and “It’s so sad” comments… proving that they aren’t even reading the posts… sometimes not even the whole title!
