Fracas’ The Monday Melee for March 17, 2008
Although I’m a little late, I’m going to take a cue from fraccy sis LindaC and do a Melee about St. Patrick’s day. Well, not exactly. I’d hate for her to think I’m copying her idea (which was brilliant) so what I will do is answer my Melee questions with something Irish, and try to stay away from the things she used for her answers. I like a challenge, and hey… it’s my own fault for being late (early bird getting that worm and all). Oh. And I’ll use green text, but only so no one pinches me. Yeah right. I know a couple of bloggers that are going to pinch me anyway.
1. The Magnificent: Name someone you absolutely adore, and tell us why.
It’s a toss-up between Sean Connery and Daniel Day Lewis. Yes, I know most people think Connery is Scottish, but his father was of Irish descent so just suck it up and let me have my way here. If you really need me to explain why, then there simply isn’t hope for you anyway.
2. The Muddy: Tell us something about life you just don’t “get”.
Corned Beef and Cabbage. It’s not that it doesn’t taste good, but why would anyone invent a dish that causes such, umm… offenses to happen later? Yeesh.
3. The Magnetic: Name something or someone good (or bad) you’re drawn to and you just can’t help it. Tell us if you want to change this or not.
Irish stepdance… aka riverdance. I find it fascinating. There’s something haunting about the music too. I love Leahy. Why would I want to change this? It offers entertainment and the opportunity to escape into another land for a while.
4. The Mainstay: Who or what is something you just can’t live without? Why?
I can’t live without the color green. Okay, green isn’t officially only an Irish color, but well… aren’t we all either wearing it, or consuming some food or beverage that’s been colored with it today? Green is fracas. Fracas is green.
5. The Masquerade: Tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t already know.
I’ve never kissed the Blarney Stone.
6. The Mettle: Tell us about a time you showed courage in yourself, or tell us what you wish you had the courage to do.
I have a green thumb and landscaped my yard without professional help, to the delight of the neighbours, who still stop (after almost ten years of being able to walk by a park-like yard instead of the haunted house yard it was before we got here) to say kind things about how much they enjoy it. I know, that doesn’t seem terribly courageous, but seriously… we bought the house when the yard was still under three feet of snow and we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. In the spring, the snow melted and the runoff was rivaled only by my tears. It was a disaster and we didn’t know where to start. One full rental dumpster and about ten loads by half-ton later, and we had a starting ground of no real grass (weeds and ants instead) and a blank canvas to work with. The picture is what a small area of it looks like now. The other sides of the house are done in a similar fashion.
What’s that white stuff on the lawn? Hail. And not as in Hail Mary, which is a Catholic prayer… and lots of Catholics are Irish….
