I Miss Your Trackbacks.

Seriously. I’m missing them.

For some time, there’s been some kind of glitch in the WordPress world, and many of us haven’t been seeing our trackbacks (links from other blogs when people link to our pages) in our stats.

Sniff. Sniff. SNIFF.

In the help forums available here at WordPress for WordPress users, it’s been a topic of discussion and the consensus seems to be that it’s some kind of Google snafu. (Snafu being a terribly technical word that’s so technical even all your techie people out there won’t understand it… just me… ’cause I am theee most technical person on a WordPress.com blog.)

The end result though, is that trackbacks from all of you wonderful people who may have linked to a fracas page, are sporadic at best and that means I don’t always know if you’re linking to me and if there’s something at your blog I should see or respond to.

I think I may try Technorati, and see if I can call up missing items there, but I’d like to ask that if anyone out there does have something they’ve written and linked to me in, wanting me to see it and respond, that they please leave me a comment so I know. I’d hate for anyone to think I’ve ignored something they took the time to do because I appreciate each and every one of you when you remember me somehow.

Thanks a fajeebiezillion.

WordPress uses technorati to show what links come in and I just got another incoming link in my WordPress dashboard.

That’s always the least interesting news you want to hear that it works on somebodies elses site, I know…

Anyways, you have been tagged today at http://www.linkylove.net/make-money-online-add-your-link-exchange-2007-10-01/monday-mood-meme.html.

DaddyP already cancelled his contribution, so all the nice bloggers can now feel at ease and join in :-)

I shudder at the thought of the sound of the wee one pictured. ::quiver::

No, actually WordPress uses Google Blogsearch to track incoming links, and there is a known glitch in their reporting. Technorati is how I keep track of my links (and I also ping them manually through Pingoat.com, because half the time the reason trackbacks don’t show up is that the blog in question hasn’t pinged Technorati; WP.com uses Pingomatic, which is subject to occasional outages. Always ping anyway). /rant over.

Trackbacks also only appear when they’re links to specific posts, not if they’re links to the blog as a whole. So if someone says, “Fracas rocks my world” and links it to the whole blog instead of one particular post, you’ll never see it if you rely on “Incoming Links”. You MUST check Technorati for those.

And if a blog isn’t claimed at Technorati, the big T will not count it at all. And neither Technorati nor Google Blogsearch count websites rather than blogs. Google is thinking of changing this, though.

Linky love – Ok, but now that I’ve figured out where to look for my trackbacks instead of counting on the stats page in my blog, I see I’ve fallen into a little version of the meme hell I was in once before. I’ll try catch up.

John – Me too. Do blogchildren fuss the same as real children?

raincoaster – Thanks for all your info. I’m heading over to email in a bit so I’ll send you a mail. I haven’t had time for mail for a bit since I’ve been trying to get the house painting finished before we get any snow. I’m so not looking forward to that.

Also: can I steal that picture for a caption contest this Friday on Teenymanolo.com?

Comment by raincoaster

Sure… be my guest.

I got it at the site listed at the end of the post. I looked there, for a source other than the blog listed, but there was none. The content didn’t lead me to believe it belonged to that blog owner, so I guess the trail goes cold there which is why I credited it to bitter purl.

I have been there a million times. Thanks, will credit it to that site, via you, since you’ve got as much of a trail as there can be.

I keep an eye on my WordPress Dashboard to watch for trackbacks (that don’t always appear as TB or Pingback comments), but I also watch stats.

saskboy – for a while, it seemed that the trackbacks were pretty reliable, and then it seemed they just stopped altogether. No, they’re sporadic.

I guess I was a little lazy, hoping to be able to rely on WP for so much. They’ve been so good I got a bit lazy.
