Some helpful bits from Lorelle on WordPress

I was reading over at Lorelle on WordPress, and decided that a person could spend all day there. Honestly. It’s no wonder the site claims the #2 spot in the WordPress category over at the Top 100 Bloggers Directory

Since they don’t offer a “humor” or “entertainment” category over there, and I don’t think fracas really belongs in the “personal” category, I chose to register also in the WordPress category. I’m quite sure that my sitting in the #8 spot for the category (the widgets display your rank in your category but clicking on the widget takes you to a main page that displays the overall ranking)  just might be as close as I’ll get to the top over there. Lorelle’s blog deserves to sit in the big chair while the rest of us claim our place on the pillows on the floor. She’s #2 in the WordPress category and #12 overall.

I think in the “overall” I’m down in the 200’s, which might not even suggest I should get a pillow.

Here are a few links to some good ideas and information from Lorelle’s blog. Enjoy!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I thought top blogs had a comedy, personal, or entertainment category, which your blog would probably fit.

Putting it in the WordPress category means that 25% or more of your post content is about WordPress tips, techniques, tricks, and coding – or at least it should. Putting it in the category to “force” your way up into the higher list isn’t fair if people are using it to find WordPress topics. Personally, I hate it when people assume that their blog is in a “WordPress” category just because it is run by WordPress. It makes it harder to find WordPress information because of that.

Unfortunately, that’s why many of these lists are not very useful.

I’ve been with the top bloggers directory since the beginning as a friend of mine started it and needed someone to test run it. It’s a fun service and I’ve been up and down in the more than two years since it’s beginning. I don’t even look any more.

Categorizing posts and content is hard to do. Just keep thinking “how will people find this” and label it accordingly.

Good luck and keep blogging! And thanks!

Well I’m not sure if I should be offended or not. Kind of seems like a “thanks for your compliment, now let me be rude to you in return” but I’m going to be optimistic and think you didn’t really mean it to sound the way it did.

I did not put my blog into the category to “force” my way up any list. I’ve registered at tons of directories and despite knowing choosing “entertainment” or “humor” as the category means I’ll have stiff competition and probably not get as high up the list as others, I still put my blog there. I don’t choose “personal” because if anyone’s paying attention, they’ll notice that I actually tell very little about myself here, preferring to entertain others instead.

I checked the categories before I joined there and this is what we’re limited to there:

“Art
Blog Software
– Blogger
– Blogspot
– Moveable Type
– WordPress
Coding
News
Personal
Religious
Technology
– Google
– SEO
Politics
Web Development”

So really… your suggestion “Categorizing posts and content is hard to do. Just keep thinking “how will people find this” and label it accordingly.” is well intended, but when applied to the choices they offer, leaves someone like me with no good option.

I’m sure others felt that way too. I checked the top 10 blogs in the WordPress category and they are as follows:

“1 – Walk-In For Jobs
(This blog contains information about current job postings and walkin interviews

It seems to me, that all of them except for yours, aren’t about WordPress tips. I checked the Blogger category, and the blogs listed there aren’t about Blogger tips and help either, rather most are blogs that would fit into an entertainment category. I checked the rules to see if it says anything about the 25% content you suggested and couldn’t find anything to tell us that’s the rule. I prefer not to automatically assume those people are trying to force their way up a list they don’t deserve to be on, I’m sure they, like me, just didn’t think they belonged anywhere else either. Had we stuck ourselves in any other category, the people on that list would be saying the same thing as you. Where does that leave us? I think most people with entertainment and humor blogs don’t know where to go, so end up choosing the category of the host they use for lack of having a better solution.

The rules are listed there as follows:

“We have a few rules here at Top100Bloggers.com — There aren’t a whole lot, just a few and we will always be monitoring sites to make sure all sites are in compliance of these rules.

1) You must use our button code — no modifying this code unless you contact us first.
2) You must maintain a DIRECT linkback to http://www.top100bloggers.com
3) No cheating — which includes using multiple buttons, advertising via e-mail, or anything of the sort
4) No adult sites will be accepted to our network — we will be the judge of this.
5) No sites that contain illegal content — ie warez or links to
6) Play fair and everyone will be happy.
7) You may not have any popups on your site

As a note, any blog that does not maintain the proper code on their site WILL be removed from our listing without notification. Thank you.

How The Ranking works: The system looks at the highest number of unique visitors/hits each submited site receives and shows the most visited as the top ranked and so on in descending order. It also checks that the hits are uniqure thru IP filtering. Every 2 weeks this is reset to allow for a fresh start of the ranking as well.”

I then thought about the whole “forcing one’s way up the ranking” concept, but again, in the rules, we’re told the ranking has to do with unique hits, highest number of visitors each site receives and so forth. I don’t see how being in the “wrong” category will falsely give anyone a rank they don’t deserve. If you’re not getting the traffic, you’re not gettting the traffic.

I was very clear in my description of what’s offered here, so I doubt anyone looking for WordPress tips and help is going to be falsely drawn to my blog via the directory. Had they offered an entertainment category, I’d have chosen it as proven by clicking on virtually any button on my sidebar. You’d see I registered in that category where it was offered.

I think the lists might not be useful to a Lorelle, or a Scoble… but they are useful to those of us who have a long way to go before we get to that point. We’re just hoping to attract some new readers and have fun while we’re at it, possibly meeting new people and broadening our horizons.

So in all, despite not being sure if your reply here was a backhanded insult or not, I still want to offer my own thanks to you because your site does offer genuinely good information for people out there. I will still plug you, visit you and think good things about your site because it merits it. And I will try to consider that you didn’t mean your comment the way it sounded. After all, even the best of doctors sometimes have a lousy bedside manner!

Well I am with you 100%…no matter what!! So there!! Have a great day:)))and please don’t stop Mondays Melee…it really helps me a lot!! XX’S

Comment by Shinade

Thanks Shinade. I don’t understand why so many people choose to assume the worst about everyone else first. After looking the situation over, I just don’t think all the people registered there in the WordPress, Blogger, Blogspot categories are doing it to be devious. I just think we entertainment bloggers have no home at that directory, we’re just like the homeless and so we see a tent and try sleep in it.

LOL.

I don’t plan to stop the Melee. I’m so pleased that it offers others a bit of a creative spark. I love to see others come up with a new idea for it like Vic did. And hey, you create such lovely graphics, maybe you’d like to answer your Melee questions some week with a graphic you’ve created for each question? That would be awesome.

I think we win by being supportive of each other. The internet is big enough for us all to shine! It’s like saying the sky isn’t big enough for all the stars… it is!

Mwah!

Joey, people are going to think you’re fraccy family too if you don’t stop saying such nice things. ;-)

I emailed you back with a surprise for you too.

Yikes, I didn’t mean it as offensive. I know the categories are tough, and I was speaking to everyone, not you specifically. Sorry about the confusion.

My beef is with those who put their blogs in all “WordPress” categories when their blogs aren’t about WordPress, other than an occasional article or two. Not you. That’s not the “blog category” their blog belongs in. Yet, because they run their blogs with WordPress, people think that’s reasons enough. No different from those who put their blogs in the “Blog” category just because their blog is a blog. :-)

It was a weak example, but one I’ve seen all over the place. It’s frustrating looking for WordPress tips and information when I have to plow through non-WordPress tips blogs for this very reason. Nothing personal at all. Just my own bitch and whine. :D

The same thing happens when I search for WordPress information on the web and the search and tag results come in with lists of those who use wordpress in their URL such as example.com/wordpress/my-blog-post. ARGH!

Have you contacted the founders of Top Blogs directly with your issues regarding their limited categories? I’m sure they would love your input. You’ve given this a lot of thought and I know they would appreciate it.
