So last night while I was surfing all the NaDruBloDa participants, (and the links at their sites) I came across this story that made me want to slap someone really bad. Unfortunately I don’t remember where I was when I read it. I clicked a link and ended up at this article and didn’t remember to go back to keep track of whose blog led me to it. It made me that mad.
Here’s the thing.
In the course of raising three children, I’ve been witness to a host of serious problems that teenagers go through and what I find so alarming is that while I can only recall from my own years as a teenage girl, as many with serious issues such as anorexia, bulimia, drugs, cutting, etc. as I can still count on my fingers, our own little world has seen a plethora of teens with serious and life-threatening issues.
I’ve lost count of the girls (and some boys as well) that we personally know of, who have struggled with or are still struggling with issues like attempted suicide, serious (and life threatening) drug abuse, alcoholism, anorexia, bulimia, cutting, depression and the like. I’ve lost count of how many girls I’ve personally seen, who are so thin from anorexia or bulimia, that it’s frightening. I’ve lost count of how many teens I personally know who cut themselves or harm themselves in other ways.
I admit, there have been times over the last few years, that I’ve felt personally overwhelmed with not knowing how we as a society can turn back this clock.
So finding the pictures below, and reading the article made me so angry I wanted to hurt people. What the hell is wrong with people these days? The artcle explains that the model in the first photo was critcized for being too heavy while the model in the second was praised for her body. I’d like these people to come spend time with the kids in the school my teen goes to, live with them… hear their stories, see their bones, watch their moms cry at night alone in their rooms, afraid they’ll lose their child to a death that should never happen. If they aren’t willing to do that. I say these people should shut their fucking pieholes and let kids grow up. Because if they don’t shut their mouths soon, there will be kids that never do grow up. I’ve seen them. They weigh 87 pounds, you can see their bones, they get high to cover up the pain they can’t make go away and still they look in the mirror and tell themselves they are too fat.
Be outraged enough to have the courage to tell these people to shut the fuck up.
I am.

Thanks to LindaC for the photo improvement. I’d tossed the two photos up here in a hurry, but she made a cleaner, neater job of it and since she’s my big sis… I figured I’d steal it just like when we were kids. Well sis, at least it’s not your favorite jeans! Kudos to you for the post and the photo improvement.

My comment submitted to the news article:
Verbatim:
I’d like these judges to come spend time with the kids in the school my teen goes to, live with them… hear their stories, see their bones, watch their moms cry at night alone in their rooms (afraid they’ll lose their child to a death that should never happen). If these judges aren’t willing to do that. I say they should shut their f-ing pieholes and let kids grow up. Because if they don’t shut their mouths soon, there will be kids that never do grow up. I’ve seen them. They weigh 87 pounds, you can see their bones, they get high to cover up the pain they can’t make go away and still they look in the mirror and tell themselves they are too fat.
For shame. These judges have absolutely NO REASON to look in the mirror and think they deserve to share the air these girls breathe. Maybe, just maybe if they take responsibilty for the weight of their words, they might be fit to breathe the same air.
End Quote.
The comments are “reviewed” We’ll see if it makes it to the screen. Hey… I did use f-ing instead of the real thing. It’s a tough comment, but one they deserve to hear.
I’ve seen more girls this year alone, who look EXACTLY like that model in the second photo, than I think anyone should see in a lifetime. Harsh words, but totally deserved. Someone’s mother out there needs us to be tough because they just aren’t able to be tough anymore.
Comment by fracas December 30, 2006 @ 10:42 PMI posted “judge” Anderson’s contact page at my blog. I figure maybe people might want to tell her what they thought, and you know how I like to be helpful. lol
Comment by LindaC December 30, 2006 @ 11:52 PM[...] So, when Fracas said; Be outraged enough to have the courage to tell these people to shut the fuck up, I happily stepped up to the plate. This *is* one of my pet peeves. [...]
Pingback by Anorexia is not beautiful & curvy isn’t fat « atLindas December 30, 2006 @ 11:56 PM[...] I really want to make an effort to get as many people to complain and voice outrage at the judge who made those ignorant and damaging comments featured in the Walk a mile first or shut the fuck up post here at fracas. Pingback by Recruiting to teach Judge Tandy Anderson a thing or two. « fracas December 31, 2006 @ 3:31 AM[...] January 2nd, 2007 Recently I wrote about the despicable comments made by contest judge Tandy Anderson, where she criticized Jen Hunter for being “too heavy” and praised Marianne Berglund for being the “perfect model”. Easily enough found online, are further pictures of the two models involved, and just as in the first comparison, the two were captured each in a similar position, each wearing a fairly short dress. Despite pleas made by publicists and those assigned to do damage control on the issue, that poor Marianne wasn’t fairly presented in her gold lame bathing suit because she was photographed outside in the wind and the wind “blew her bathing suit” to her body, the following photos clearly shows that the least of Marianne’s problems is the wind. Well, unless she’s worried that it might blow her over. I doubt it’s the fault of the wind, that she’s as thin as she is. [...]
Pingback by The true faces of anorexia. « fracas January 2, 2007 @ 1:34 PMHi Fracas, getting caught up on my reading. I had missed this one. Recently I was over at Mammavision and learned a great deal more about this disorder than I had learned in the xxx number of years I’ve dealt with disordered eating. It occurred to me while reading through a few articles and comments that I do not know what heathy looks like. And now I think i am starting to understand why.
I recently found this photographer, and I’m really smitten. I thought you might like to check his work out.
Cut and paste the below url to see Katy’s fat actress shot. Eye opening.

Comment by hazel8500 March 21, 2007 @ 2:47 PMHey! I just saw that at your blog and was going to come back here and link to it for you. It’s a good find. Bravo to her for doing something about it. How ridiculous. She looks great.
Comment by fracas March 21, 2007 @ 2:53 PMYou looked much sexier in the first photo against the burnt rose colored wall, what a perfectly beautiful woman, whereas the “model perfect” photo looks like you are very physically ill, even suffering from cahexia related to some deadlly disease/cancer. Gain a few pounds, and find that cute smile again.
Comment by Joey August 5, 2007 @ 4:43 AMI agree about the two photos, only they’re of two different models, neither of which is me. The one on the left was told she was too fat and the one on the right was told she was perfect.
Comment by fracas August 5, 2007 @ 12:45 PMGimme the fat girl.
