I, uh… just need some space.

In reference to the Running out of space?contest at WordPress.

It was a night he would never forget.

There were flowers, not your typical grocery store kind, but those wildly scented and exotic frangipani blooms, flown in all the way in from Australia. There were candles, big chunky, burn all night candles to create that perfect kind of light where he would look like he did twenty-five years ago and she would notice. There was wine, really good wine and the same crystal glasses they’d toasted with twenty five years ago. The chocolates were chosen with care, the fire was crackling in the fireplace and all he was waiting for was for her to come downstairs.

After all, he knew she’d had something on her mind, he knew she wanted to “talk”. This would certainly make her believe he had every intention of being an “attentive” husband.

He could hardly stand the wait and as he watched her descend the winding stairway, he could see the delight on her face. The corners of her mouth slowly turned though and he watched as a spectator watches a sinking ship, knowing by the time she would place herself softly in the chair next to him, that none of this would matter. She was upset and there was no changing it, no magical disappearance of the conversation he began to dread.

It came out awkwardly.

She was polite, smelled the flowers and smiled; sipped the wine and nodded approval. And then, she said it.

“I, uh… just need some space.”

His whole world came crashing down that moment. He felt like a wrecking ball had just careened into the room. He couldn’t smell the flowers any longer, couldn’t taste the wine and suddenly, though there was a roaring fire crackling and hissing not two feet from where he sat, he was frozen cold.

“Can’t we work this out,” he pleaded?

“I just don’t know,” she whispered, in a reply so quiet he could barely distinguish the words. “I don’t know what to do anymore. I just have too much baggage. I can’t think straight anymore, I don’t sleep well, I’m always miserable and I just don’t know what to do with all this stuff I’m holding on to.”

It was almost as if she was begging him for an answer. He could tell she needed a solution, an answer, a miracle if you will. He wanted to give her that miracle.

“Come quick,” he urged, “I know exactly what you need.” He bolted from his chair so quickly; the wine flew off the table in one direction, spilling its inky redness over the antique rug. He didn’t care.

She could see he was on his way to the office. Not sure what to make of his actions, she sat puzzled for a moment.

“Please,” he called, “Come now.”

She rose from her chair with uncertainty. She’d listened to him before and all that had happened had been one disaster after another, until they’d had to call someone in to fix everything. If only she knew how to keep everything running cleanly and smoothly.

She sighed and went after him, wistfully wishing she could enjoy the wafting fragrance of the frangipani and the flicker of the candlelight. How could she though, when all she could think about was how she was going to get the space she so sorely needed. All she wanted to do was be able to know everything was in its place and that the world was under control but it just seemed so impossible now.

With the resignation of a death row inmate walking that last mile, she made her way down the hallway and stepped through the doorway of the little home office they had created with such hope. He was there, seated at the computer, giddy with excitement.

“Look, read it,” he insisted, pointing wildly at the screen.

She sat down on the edge of the chair beside him, just like they used to long ago when things were new, there was none of this emotional clutter to worry about and the world seemed to be in the palm of their hands. She closed her eyes and remembered that day long ago when they first started out. The words came back to her almost as if they were being played to her on a movie screen.

“WordPress.com is an easy and powerful way to start blogging. It’s Free! Hundreds of great features. Connect with an audience of dozens to millions. Stop sending mass emails to everyone. Archive your thoughts. All the cool kids are. Why the heck not?”

Her thoughts were interrupted by his voice and a gentle tug on her sleeve.

“Look honey, this is how you can get the space. You can do it; you’re the most creative person I know. It’s why I fell in love with you and why I want to be the only other user you ever allow to post on your blog. The most creative idea will win the 10GB of upload space, and you have almost 48 hours left to do it!”

In an instant, she knew everything would be ok.

Suddenly, she remembered that downstairs was a ridiculously expensive plate of chocolates (that would certainly be something she’d have to blog about eating), flowers all the way from a foreign country that would be heavenly once tossed into the bath, wine that definitely needed to be consumed and a roaring fire to enjoy with this guy that looks amazingly just like he did 25 years ago.

Damn, life was good after all.

She would enter this contest and she would win that extra space because when the folks at WordPress really understood how even the idea of that extra bit of space had saved her from doing something really stupid; they would choose her as the winner for certain.

Her mind was racing with all the possibilities of how to use up the extra space but a nudge from beside her jerked her back from that world inside her head.

“Um, you haven’t won the contest yet honey. You log in and I’ll bring the chocolates and the wine in here.”

Indeed, it was a night he would never forget.

Keep reading to find out why….

This fictional story is part of my entry into the WordPress Running out of space? contest. The task is to blog about what we would do to use up the prize of 10GB of space if we were chosen the winner.

What I would do to with the space if I won the Running out of space? contest is to keep all of my images right here. Fracas gives away images. Not just to use as desktop wallpaper, fracas gives them out to use, create with and enjoy in a variety of ways. Currently, I’ve been creating thumbnails of the images to upload straight to the blog and display as what’s available. When the user clicks on them, the complete and uncompressed image opens up as an image in a new window, stored at an image hosting site. I would love to keep everything in the blog because sometimes I feel like the woman in the story… I just can’t deal with all of my baggage.

With the graphics program open, a blog window open, another window open with the image hosing site open, a window open showing fracas files on my hard drive and so on, I sometimes want to scream “I need more space”. I haven’t used my free space yet, but I’m a new blogger. When I started the blog in October, I knew that if I kept adding images, I wouldn’t last long so creating thumbnails and linking to somewhere else seemed to be the right choice.

And so…I ask the folks at WordPress to consider me because after all, one good deed deserves another, right? I good deed by taking photos and then actually, truly and willingly, giving them away to people even if they plan to use them to make money with.

And besides that, if I did win… it would create (for me) quite an uproar and that is what my blog (and a fracas) is all about.

You crack me up! You should win with that entry!!!! And I’m not biased at all..

Thanks Joy. I saw the contest last night and the majority of the story just jumped out of my head. I did a bit of editing today to post it but I’m always amazed at how when I write fiction or poems, or prayers, it just flies out of my head almost as if it didn’t even come from me. It’s only the informational type articles where I spend time researching.

Maybe I should’ve done NaNoWriMo?

Anyway, I sure luv ya. What a good friend/sis you are.

Comment by fracas

That was great!!! Okay — I *so* want to do this. HELP!! It says;
….You must blog about your idea and link back to this post. It’s no use leaving a comment here.
…Your post must send a pingback to this announcement to be entered in the competition.

How do I do that?? I’m a total newbie at wordpress, have only blogged for a couple of weeks and have no idea how to link back or send a pingback. And I had to retype that 3 TIMES because I keep wanting to type pinkback instead of pingback. lol.

Comment by Linda

Fracas – NaNoWriMo? Say heh? It that like Lalapalooooza?

Linda – Pinkback? LOL And typing pingback won’t cause it to pingback.. LOL But that’s all I know concerning that. Wish I could help ya. It has something to do with the link, I think…. so when people click it, the folks at WordPress not only know where the click came from, but also know… something else? LOL Umm. sorry…

You are amazing Fracas…. you should write books!! You have me hooked! I will be blogging before the weekend is out… If I can figure out how to do it. You are one great Canadian babe!

Comment by Aussie Babe

For anyone else reading the comments, yes, I did pay all three of them to say those things. ;-)

The things I gathered from other posts there, and from checking every conceivable place within the blog admin pages, are that you need to

Make sure to work in a direct link into your post, to the post about the contest. Linda, if you notice in your blog tag post… once I made a post here at fracas and linked to that post in your blog, it automatically generated a pingback comment in your blog. Go see it.. it’s there. That’s because in your blog, where you wrote (or edit) that post, if you look to the right hand side of the edit window, there are bars that say “Discussion”, “Post Password”, “Post slug” and more. Pop open the one called “Discussion” and make sure the option to Ping is clicked.

Also, below the “upload” area, is a bar labelled “Trackback”. You add the url for the trackback there.

I noticed though, that once I’d done my post and went back to the contest post at WordPress, the post I left there is being held waiting for moderation. I believe that’s why others there were quick to post that their ping wasn’t showing up.

Hope that helps. I can’t wait to see what your entry ends up being. And heck… sure only one person wins but we all get the benefit of the extra traffic from those who click our posts at the contest page, wanting to read what we’ve come up with. Heck… maybe from there we get an extra loyal reader or two? At any rate, it was fun to come up with the submission. Good luck!

Comment by fracas

Good post – Go for it – Even if you don’t win the 10gig, they should give you 5 on merit alone :)

Comment by John Pangia

Thx for your help! Finally got the stupid ping to work! As for your attempt at winning…while I find it creative and unique…well, mine is funnier! Yes, I said it and I know it is not a word but i likes it! LOL!

Again, thx for the help and good luck in the contest!

Hey fracas — you seem to have the pingback thing down so I have a question for you, if you don’t mind. If we do a pingback, is it supposed to generate a comment in the post that we link to? Or does it just “let the author know” we linked to them?

Thanks!

Comment by halfawake

Actually, I think I’ve got it. I followed your instructions and it worked, eventually. I just wasn’t patient enough :-). So you can do a pingback without entering a trackback URL, and the author you link to does get notified in their email and with a comment in their post.

Comment by halfawake

John, I hope you realize if I don’t win, I’m going to cc your post to them in a last ditch effort.

Axe, you’re welcome of course, and good luck to you too! (But I really think I should win)

halfawake, I like your tagline. I didn’t see your entry at your site so I’m off to the contest page to click on your pingback.

Comment by fracas

Thanks fracas.
Actually when I said it “worked” I meant it worked for another blog that I did for a test. I don’t think it actually worked in the contest blog… My entry is up at my blog if you still want to have a look. Thanks again for the education :-).

Comment by halfawake

If cc’ing the post doesn’t work, maybe we can send Sid to pay them a visit. He can do some, uh… lobbying. Yeh, that’s what we’ll call it, lobbying :)

Comment by John Pangia

I love Sid, bring him on. Or maybe he could just send them one of his Taco Bell Christmas cards?

Comment by fracas

You WON! :)

Comment by Ergo

Was I the first one to tell you that??

Comment by Ergo

Oh, and loved your unique contest entry… the story and all. Very creative. :)

Love it. You deserve your space :)

Comment by girlfriday

Congratulations!! I loved the story…very well deserved. :D

Comment by Mike

Great entry. Quite funny!

Comment by icedmocha

After all this reading about trackbacks and pings, I still don’t get it.

But CONGRATS! on the win! Woo Hoo!

Comment by Joy

AND… what on EARTH is a “Post Slug”?????

Comment by Joy

I think a post slug is the text that gets inserted into the permanent URLs for our posts (so for this one, it’s ‘i-uh-just-need-some-space’). They have thses to that the URLs are readable instead of being like /?php=jdh434 or something else nonsensical.

Comment by halfawake

You won? Cool :)

Comment by John Pangia

Congrats! Looks like you were right, you won, I lost. Oh well, less work for me and more for you! LOL!

LOL, that’s pretty cool. (Yeah, I’m old enough to still think people use the word cool)

I will do my best. ‘Been a little obssessed with the penis posts but heck… I’l get crackin’.

Comment by fracas

Stupid, dope, or fresh are the terms used nowadays. Unless you are around old people, then you use cool.

Comment by axewielderx

Well I qualify as “old” people so that’s why I used it. ;-)

I have a 20 year old, a 16 year old and a 10 year old. I hear the terms they use all the time and thus, avoid using them myself (like the plague) lest I look like one of those old people that are trying to be a teenager.

Ick. I didn’t like being a teenager even when I was one. I sure don’t want to sound like one now. I like being “old”.

Comment by fracas

Somehow, any posts from fracas all seem to go into the askimet spam bin. This is happening to me at my own blog but also at others’ wordpress blogs.

I’m posting this to see if I can untrain askimet that…

I, FRACAS, AM NOT SPAM.

You are truly deserving. Keep it up! You’re an inspiration!
